The matronly Queen of the Gods, she sees herself particularly as the protector of marriage, childbirth and married women, and more generally of all women, be they virgins, matrons or widowed. She is a jealous wife, and prosecutor of the children of illicit affairs, particularly those of their husband Zeus. She vain, obstinate and quarrelsome, when force fails to get her her way she will resort to outright manipulation.
