The Royal Amber Navy at its height, just before the invasion by Bleys and Corwin, consisted of three main branches; the Northern and Southern Fleets each a distinct fighting arm capable of defending Amber alone, and the Golden Circle Stations, a collection of overseas stations to protect Ambers trade. Each arm was under the command of an Admiral (usually a Prince of Amber) and maintained its own facilities and ships. As well as the standing crowned owned navy, the Amber navy has a large contingnet of feudal levies. Each Sea Lord is expected to contribute 1 4th rate ship and 3 Frigates to the fleet for each Lordship he holds. These ships serve with the fleet for no more than ten years before being replaced by another ship, and crew from the same Lord. The intention was to give everyone military experience, maintain a standing fleet and yet let the Lords have use of thier ships for trade most of the time while maintaining a reserve that can be called on for war. The Northern Fleet
Admiral: Prince Caine The Northern Fleet is the home fleet for Amber. She patrols the actual shadow of Amber and the shadows close in to Amber. She is the last line of defense against invaders. The Northern Fleet's main ports are Amber itself, Sun Harbor in the Eastern Isles, and the Western Caves on the Distant Sea. The Northern Fleet has been under the control of Caine for several centuries. In addition to the Crown vessels, and Feudal levies of the reserve, Caine has shown the remarkable talent to quickly recruit forces out of shadow in time of emergency. The character of these recruits is rather questionable, but they seem consistently loyal to Caine, and are willing to fight in Amber's defense. The vessels so recruited are typically no larger than Frigates but the crews are trained in both ship to ship artillery and boarding actions.
The Southern Fleet
Admiral: Prince Gerard
The Southern Fleet is responsible for the defense of Amber outwards into shadow towards the south, the direction of most of the threats. Main ports include; Amber, and the island of Cas in the shadow of Gavera.
Golden Circle Stations
Admiral: Unoccupied Merchant Fleet/Reserve Fleet
Members of the Naval Reserve were not ex-Navy. They were Merchant Navy personnel who joined the Naval Reserve and receive a limited amount of training. The captain of a merchant ship who was in the Naval Reserve has to apply for a warrant from the king to fly the solid Green Ensign rather than the Green and Blue Ensign of the regular merchant fleet. In reality ships flagged as Naval Reserve are ships of the Sea Lords whose Captains have at one time served with the regular navy as a Captain, and whose ship is maintined at the standards to be quickly brought to active duty. The King's Maritime Regiment of Foot (Royal Marines) 1 Regiment 1200 men. |
