Corwin's Pattern was inscribed in a Shadow well past the Ygg boundary in the open in the middle of a large, barren plateau. Near its beginning Corwin planted his staff cut from Ygg. This quickly grew into a large tree of the same species with the same effect on anyone with Blood of Dworkin's Pattern as Ygg itself making it impossible for them to Shadow Walk or Hellride to it though they can get to nearby shadows on the Primal shadow side
The Pattern is bluish-silver in color and about 125 yards in diameter. Over it the tree grew banyan like dropping its root supports into the spaces between the Pattern's lines until it formed a thin canopy over the entire Pattern. This leads to a strange fantasy like setting, light from above through the leaves and lit from below by the Pattern. Even more spectacular is when a leaf from the tree falls on the Pattern sending up a small shower of sparks and a miniature tornado. As this happens frequently it has become a place that people come to sit and watch.
By the time Corwin returns to his Pattern after the Patternfall War the tree had
grown to cover the entire thing.
Corwin spent a few months in the area, scouting around. He discovered that his Pattern lay in the middle of a large triangular plateau with mountains to both the Southeast and Southwest and sloping down to plain in the North. On either side of the mountains a fertile plain lay next to the sea. The plain on the East was almost twice as wide as that on the West. No large rivers broke the plateau but there was a stream about a half a mile away and a number of small lakes nearby. Feeling confident no one would disturb his Pattern Corwin returned to Amber with great difficulty because of the storms raging between it and Amber. He also found that the closer he came to Amber the harder it was to shift shadow, so much so that he was forced to have Random trump him the final leg. He soon found that it was impossible for him to shift shadow away from Amber also. He returned with Fiona and Random neither of which seemed to have problems shifting shadow near Amber. Gerard was left as Regent. As the approached Corwin's Pattern they approached Corwin's Pattern they found that only Corwin could shift shadow, in fact it became easier for him the closer they came. They found a city called Mylore had been built near the Pattern and was the capital of the small kingdom of Mylore. The Pattern had been ignored (Oberon explained that he was keeping people from noticing it and him). Random soon Trumped back to Amber and Corwin went of exploring some more. This left Fiona at the Pattern who quickly found she could no longer come within several miles of it, every time she tried she would find herself quickly distracted and walking the other way before she realized it. She found that she could Trump closer but could not get close enough to talk to Oberon or see the Pattern herself. When asked locals had no problems but soon forgot what they had seen there. She also quickly found out she could not shadow walk away from this shadow even when she went hundreds of miles away from it (usually you need to be about 35mi from Amber to shift shadow). Once Corwin returned she found that as long as she was with him she had no problems approaching the Pattern but could not approach it alone. Oberon acknowledged this and said it was because of what she was made of. He could always sense her presence, even extremely far off in Shadow, except when Corwin was close by, then he couldn't tell where she was at all. He claimed it was a natural effect and he had no control over it. Fiona huffed and said she that doubted it, he was probably doing it on purpose. They returned to Amber by Trump. Corwin returned several times over the next few years, and noticed something very odd, while he was near his Pattern, or even in nearby shadow the time flow seemed to be equal to that of Amber. While he was in Amber time seemed to flow much faster at his Pattern in relation to Amber and a journey of a few weeks in Amber meant that decades passed at his Pattern. At the Pattern kingdoms rose and fell, foreigners came, conquered and restored the kingdom to the natives. As time went on Oberon became concerned, he said it was getting harder for him to turn people away, they were getting more real. Finally Corwin decided to settle down and rule the area himself. |
