An item gives you 5 x <I>points in quality</I> attribute bonus to the relevant attribute. For example a sword bought with 4 points of vitality would give you +20 points of Strength. Dropping to human level then buying items would usually get you back to amber level, conversly a magic sword still wont help much against Benedicts Warfare.
