[07-Jul-2006] Im going to try and discuss some of the changes Im making here before they are finalized so you guys can read this and comment. You do read this right? Please keep the emails concering each seperate with the subject as the subject of the section.

New/Changed Attributes
[07-Jul-2006] Im unhappy with the attributes system. Warefare seems to overused and broad. Strength not at all. There also seems to be whole areas lacking.
  1. Social: Im thinking of adding a new attribute called Social to cover that lack. Its the attribute Flora is obviously first in. It includes things like Grace, Etiquette, Presence, Decorum, Culture, Manners, Salesmanship and Diplomacy. It broader than mere beusty is how one acts properly in social situations, even those you know nothing about.

    This attribute is going to affect the court, whether you come dressed right without help, whether you remember which Surry is Lord Surry, which one is Lord Mayor Surry and which one to greet first without causing a scene. Can you discuss the opera with Flora or is it all just fat women singing?

  2. Vitaility: We arnt using strength anymore. Its too shallow. The attribute to replace it will be Vitality a more encompassing one that include everything strength did, plus pure immediate resistance to damage. Think Boromir taking arrows and standing up afterwards able to continue, too immediate for Endurence but noticable.

Attribute Scale System
[07-Jul-2006] -25, -10 and such hurt my head sometimes and dont make much sense sometimes. Average humans are -25 strength? So what are invalids and old people? I had already expanded the scale to -50 in some cases. How can shadow people buy down?

Im thinking about doing it this way: Average Earth Adults (the base standard) have a 25. Thats a positive 25. Children and old people less, down to 0. Amberites will start with a 25 in all attributes. They can still by down to 0 as can anyone else and obviously buy up. This seems more inline with the flavor of the game than the superhero Amberites start 25 points above normal humans then buy up to insane levels.

  • 0 means your as mobile, energetic, and psycically sharp as a rock as the case may be depending on the attribute.
  • 25 Average human, the citizens of Amber.
  • 50 Normal human max. Napoleons Warfare, Olympic weight lifters strength.
  • 50-100 Typical being of power. Lords of Chaos, Amberites, Rebman Royals, some Golden circle rulers...
  • 100+ Gods. The best of the Amberites and Lords of Chaos.

In this system I think Ill let you buy down any number of points not just at the 5s or 10s as long as your above 0.

So basic character creation means players are 225 point characters. 125 for the base 5 attributes + 100 for being an Amberite. Makes it easier for Nobles to have 60 or so, Lords of Chaos 80-90 all plus XP. Ill post the actual ranges for maxes and mins when I determine them.

Sub Attributes
[10-Jul-2006] One of the problems with the original system is that some of the attributes are overly broad (Warfare) and other extremly narrow (Strength). Im toying with introducing sub attributes to break them up.

    Warfare
  • Strategy: Directing a fight through sub commanders (Large Battles, Fleet actions)
  • Tactics: Personally directing a fight (Chess, Squad actions, Ship to Ship combat)
  • Melee: Fighting youself (Fencing, Most one on one games)
    Psyche
  • Sensativity: Perceiving the universe around you.
  • Attack: Beating down enemies
  • Defense: Defending against enemies, hiding from Sensativity
    Physicality
  • Strength: How much can you lift
  • Endurence: how long can you go without rest
  • Resistance: how much damage you can take
  • Healing: how quiickly you heal/regenerate
    Social
  • Presausion: convincing others, lieing, seduction
  • Presence: grace, beauty, machismo
Yes I combined Vitiality (see earlier post) and Endurence. I f I dont go that way they break down as follows:
    Vitality
  • Strength
  • Resistance
    Endurence
  • Healing
  • Stamina
Id like better terms for Psyche and maybe a 3rd subattribute for Social.

The plan is to hold the auction on the 4 or 5 main stats as normal. After that the player can divide those points amoung the sub stat as they want. The player who is first on thier ladder get a bonus of 10% of the main attribute to each of the sub stats. The character who is first overall get the same bonus, in addition to the 10% for being first on his ladder.

Example: Frankie wins the player auction for Warfare at 40 points. He divides up his points as follows:

  • Strategy: 15
  • Tactics: 10
  • Melee: 15

    Beacuse he is 1st on the player ladder he gets an additional +4 to each sub attribute:

  • Strategy: 19
  • Tactics: 14
  • Melee: 19
    If Benedict (and a lot of other Elders ) died he could be first overall and gain another +4 to each sub attribute but its not likely.

    Sub Attributes
    [11-Jul-2006] I think this is a better bbreak down for Psyche:
      Psyche
    • Sensativity
    • Mental Strength
    • Magic Ability
    Sensativity cover noticing things beyond the normal 5 senses like how many people are near by, if someone has Pattern potential, disguised shapechangers.

    Mental Strength would deal with attack and defense, forcing trump contact, range of trump use.

    Magic ability covers how easy it is to cast spells, and use the pattern.

    Amber Opened
    [18-Feb-2008] I have opened up all the Amber pages for the HCK campaign so anyone can read them. Though it appears they are editable changes will not actually take place.
