Skipped over by Corwin's misleading novels is the majority of the kingdom of Amber, the source of the population needed to support the city, army and navy of amber.
While the kings of Amber claim all of shadow as their domain in reality they control only a small part of one shadow (about the size of England) on a permenant basis. While the exact borders are unclear the settled regions are quite distinct.
There are limited passes over the Blue Mountians, The Conus Pass, 30 miles west of the harbor of Amber behind Mt.Kolvir which crosses northward from Garnath into Arden, The Arden Pass which runs northwest-southeast 60mi west of the harbor, and the Pass by Jones Falls, 100mi down the range. There is no pass over the mountains south of the Gothan Hills. The Blue mountains are not exceptionaly high, generally less than 5000'. The proximity to the seai, at its height above all the other peaks is what make Kolvir seem so large.
In recent times the Vale has been ravaged several times causing much destruction. First by the Black Road and the Armies of Chaos, then by Eric himself who set the forest on fire in an attempt to hinder those armies. It had been several years since the fire and Vale was well on its way to recovering, though the trees in most of the northern third are still small, when the Rebman army cleared the trees and brush and threw up signifigant earthwork fortifications at 3 locations; near the Cairn on the beach, the crossroads where the Garnath and Arden-Rebma Roads cross, the crossroads where the Royal Road crosses the Arden-Rebma road, and just before the Arden road enters the Blue mountains at the Arden Pass. While the Rebman army has retreated the earthworks remain intact, and the area around them for almost half a mile is only now beginning to become covered with weeds and grass.
