I think we have all played something before. When we play D&D we make Fighters, Wizards and the like in a fantasy setting. When we play White Wolf games we make modern day characters that have supernatrual powers. Amber is different. You can play anything that is a child of an Amberite. You can play a stone age hunter gatherer, a mideval princess (yes that kind too, with the tights and everything), a techo-geek jacked into a 3d world who is 300lbs and pasty white because he never sees the light of day and feeds himself intravenously. Everything is possible. Remember however, electricity doesn't work in Amber, so high-tech reliant characters may have a problem there.
Your character must be human. The character can be from any time period, any place, any culture. They will be the grandchild of Oberon, they may or may not know who thier Amberite parent is. No one will have been raised in Amber, or the Courts of Chaos. The game will start a few years after the end of the first series. I'm going to do some magic hand waving, so that few years was as few as a month and as long as twenty years in shadow, and with all the disruption it varied alot. See Setting. Your job is to come up with a brief character concept before the game. Decide which attributes you want to bid for, what powers and items would be appropriate so you know how much you have to spend on the auction. I highly recommend you at least take Pattern Imprint and Shadow Walking. If you don't have Pattern Imprint your going to get a lot of Bad Stuff very quickly when someone wants you to prove your really a family member. Sample Characters and some Bad Examples Read this next. Did you notice the ask the GM part? Did you ask the GM anything?
First Session We will have the attribute auction. We will start with an Attribute. Everyone will write down a number for their intial bid on the special color coded sticky notes and pass them to me. I will announce the bids. At that point the open bidding starts for 1st rank. 1st rank is important you want first rank in everything. Having 1st rank is like having an infinite score, its tremendously better than everything below it, no matter how close they are. Once bidding has stopped on the first attribute we will move to the second, thier and fourth. In addition to the 4 attributes I will auction off 2 full Trump Decks of the elder Amberites, and a position in Amber. The position can is chosen by the winner and can be one of: Admiral of the Golden Fleet, Captain of the Palace guard, Archbishop of the Church of the Unicorn, or anything else not already taken by and Elder.. If you don't get a Trump deck you may buy upto 2 Trumps of any elder at a cost of 5pts each, yes expensive. There are no known Trumps of the PCs. After the auctions we will finish off the characters, buying powers, items and shadows. Be ready to answer the Questions and run some scenes that may have happened early in the characters life.
Sections to read Important questions to answer for the background of both the story and character.
In order to do those dramatic things you also need to screw up. Everyone will start with 20.
The basic stats for your character. The actual number will be determined by auction.
Starting out even before walking the Pattern all characters will have:
